Memory Verse: 1 Samuel 17:47- “All those who are gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves, for the battle is the Lord’s.”
Who is David? Most of you know David as the young shepherd who killed Goliath. David is known for many things among those are: being chosen by God to be the king of Israel, his courage in defeating Goliath, being a musician who worshipped God with his whole heart, establishing Jerusalem as the capital, and being an ancestor of Jesus.
David might possibly be the most celebrated warrior and musician in the Bible.
Let’s just read the account of David and Goliath found in 1 Samuel 17. (Read it here)
So, who killed Goliath? It’s not a trick question. David killed Goliath. But who told us that David killed Goliath?
Samuel told us. Samuel wrote this down, not David. Let’s cut to the chase here…What we think, and others think is David’s greatest battle, he never wrote a word about. He did not boast of his own glory or victory.
What did David tell us about? He told us about Bethsheba, what most of us believe to be his greatest sin. (Read Psalm 51) He confessed to his shortcomings and sins he committed, but he never told us about Goliath. Why?
Because he didn’t need to. Samuel wrote about it, and he was celebrated for the victory. He did not need to brag or boast. It was clear that God was the power behind him and God used him to bring glory to Himself. It is a beautiful thing when miraculous things happen that we couldn’t do ourselves, because we know it was GOD, and others see that it was God. You see when, we do things for God’s glory, the victories are sweeter, and God makes sure you are rewarded.
What can we learn from this?
1. That when we do things to glorify God, the boasting belongs to Him. It is not about what we do in our own power but about what God does through us.
2. Recognition comes without us having to say a word when it is done for the right reasons.
3. It is important to confess our sins. We must be honest with ourselves, others, and especially God. It is important for us to be an example in our weaknesses and show others the need for repentance and forgiveness. Our whole lives, especially when we fall short, is important and how we come back from those things matters. Others need to see you fighting your way back to God and getting back on the right path.
